Movie: The Huntsman: Winter’s War
My Rating: 3 stars
I was definitely mostly interested in this movie for the costume opportunities. Although, no amount of googling revealed a low-cost sparkling, silver gown, with menacing, ice jewelry option for me. And, the made me a bit sad. But, the next best option was still pretty great—dressing up as a badass warrior lady in leather armor, and big tough boots. You know, my usual casual-wear. Now, if I could have only tracked down a set of deer antler blades. Oh well. Really, all the costumes in this movie are pretty spectacular. I wanted them all. And, I was glad that was the case, because the movie didn’t really bring much else to the table. But I guess that was the case with the first movie in this series, Snow White and the Huntsman. A disappointing story, but some pretty good graphics and production value.
In this movie Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the famous Huntsman that we meet in Snow White. This movie gives us a pretty detailed account of his backstory, and also picks up after the action that happens in that first movie. In Snow White his character alludes to a very painful lost love, and this movie we get to meet her—a fellow Hunstman played by Jessica Chastain. These Hunstman are the rigorously trained assassins of the Ice Queen. So, naturally this is a forbidden love. And, their paths take them on a journey to escape from the Queen’s evil clutches, and hopefully take her down. It’s a very classic fairytale, full of heroes and villains, love triumphing over evil, and mistreated children pursuing the justice they deserve. There aren’t too many surprises here. But then, there never really are any real shockers in a good fairytale.
This isn’t really a must see. The story is just alright. But, the movie is filled with plenty of attractive actors wearing very beautiful gowns and armor sets—Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain—they’re all decked out in some very exciting finery. And, clearly that kind of thing piqued my interest. I’m dying to get my hands on Charlize Theron’s golden getup from this movie (you know for lounging around the house). So, go ahead and check out this movie is costumes are your thing. But, it’s probably not interesting enough for anyone else.
